What we look at is typically what we become. If we look to things that are contrary to God, we will become more like those things. If we look to God however, we will become more like Him.
Steve reflects on the letter to the church at Ephesus in Revelation 2. Following the accolades and note-worthy actions of the church is a rebuke that should awaken us to the motive of our actions. They had forgotten their first love. This tells us that doing what's right is possible even when the motive of the heart is wrong.
We're asked to consider whether what we think, say, and do is a genuine response to the love of God in our life or an empty (or self-centered) case of "going-through-the-motions." It is an important question to ask because the measure of God always lands on the condition of the heart.
